This seven-day Kerala journey places three water-based landscapes in a useful sequence: forest-fringed Periyar Lake, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and the Alleppey backwaters. Kochi heritage and a Munnar stop complete the route. It is a good programme to consider if quiet observation, changing scenery and an overnight houseboat matter more than adding a beach extension.
The itinerary below follows Varanasi Excursion’s 7-Day India Wildlife Kerala Houseboat tour, checked on 11 October 2026. Unlike some similar seven-day listings, this itinerary specifically includes a Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary visit.
Day-wise itinerary
Day 1: Kochi heritage
Arrive at Kochi airport or railway station, transfer to the hotel and visit St Francis Church, Chinese Fishing Nets, the Jewish Synagogue and Dutch Palace. Overnight in Kochi.
Day 2: Kochi to Munnar
Travel into the Western Ghats and visit Eravikulam National Park and Mattupetty Dam. Overnight in Munnar. Confirm actual road timing with the operator rather than relying on the source’s short drive estimate.
Day 3: Munnar to Periyar
Continue to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in the Cardamom Hills, with a listed sanctuary visit. Overnight in Periyar.
Day 4: Periyar Lake and spice plantations
The programme includes a scenic lake boat ride and an afternoon spice-plantation visit. Carry binoculars if you enjoy observing birds at a distance. Wildlife sightings depend on conditions and cannot be promised.
Day 5: Periyar to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
Transfer to Kumarakom and visit its bird sanctuary, then stay in a hotel. This provides a separate land-based nature stop before the following day’s houseboat experience.
Day 6: Kumarakom to Alleppey houseboat
Board a traditional kettuvallam and cruise past paddy fields, palms and fishing villages. Fresh lunch, dinner and tea are described aboard. The boat anchors for the evening and overnight stay.
Day 7: Alleppey to Kochi
Breakfast on the houseboat is followed by Alleppey exploration and the return transfer. The listing estimates about 70 kilometres and two hours to Kochi; allow further time for traffic and flight check-in.
What the listing confirms
Accommodation consists of five hotel nights in a double or twin room with daily breakfast plus one houseboat night, with 3-star, 4-star and 5-star choices. Houseboat lunch, dinner and breakfast, an English-speaking driver and local assistance are confirmed. Jain, vegetarian, vegan, halal and kosher meal options are offered on request.
Flights and insurance are excluded. Ask for written details of admission fees, hotel names, houseboat category and air-conditioning hours; these should not be inferred from a destination photograph or a general activity description.
