Two Kerala itineraries can follow the same route and still include different experiences. This five-day journey starts and ends in Kochi, stays in Munnar and Thekkady, and spends the final night on an Alleppey houseboat. Its most useful planning detail is the separation between included activities and optional visits.
This guide follows the current Kerala Tour with Houseboat and Wildlife operated by Varanasi Excursion. It explains the published programme without treating optional activities or wildlife sightings as promises.
Five-day itinerary
- Day 1 – Cochin to Munnar: Meet your driver at Cochin International Airport or the railway station and travel to Munnar. Stops at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls are optional. Breakfast is listed.
- Day 2 – Munnar: The Tea Museum and guided explanation of tea production are included. Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty boating, Echo Point and Kundala Lake pedal boating are optional.
- Day 3 – Munnar to Thekkady: A guided spice-plantation tour is included. The Periyar Lake boat ride, elephant ride, market visit and Kalaripayattu performance are optional.
- Day 4 – Thekkady to Alleppey: Board the houseboat for an included backwater cruise and overnight stay. Breakfast, lunch, evening tea or coffee with snacks, and dinner are listed for the day.
- Day 5 – Alleppey to Cochin: Breakfast is served on the houseboat before the return transfer. Fort Kochi sightseeing is optional and depends on the onward schedule.
The included-versus-optional distinction
The expanded package section lists accommodation, additional services and transport as included categories, but it does not publish the detailed service text or hotel category. The day-wise itinerary gives the clearest confirmation: tea interpretation, the spice-plantation tour and the houseboat cruise are included activities. Several experiences often associated with this route are explicitly optional.
Ask for a written quotation naming the hotels, room type, vehicle, houseboat category and every prepaid activity. A place appearing as a landmark does not automatically mean its entrance ticket or activity charge is included.
Planning Munnar correctly
Day 2 contains one included learning experience and several optional outdoor stops. Choose priorities according to park opening, weather and energy level. Eravikulam National Park can close seasonally, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. If boating is important, confirm the operating schedule and ticket arrangements before travel.
Planning the Thekkady afternoon
The included spice-plantation visit provides a dependable focus. The Periyar boat ride and evening performance require their own timing. Trying to add every optional activity can make the day rushed, especially after the drive from Munnar. Select one major optional experience and ask the operator to build a realistic sequence around it.
Houseboat questions to ask
- Is the boat private for your party or shared?
- Which cabin and air-conditioning arrangement applies?
- Are the listed meals and snacks suitable for your dietary requirements?
- Where and when does boarding take place?
- What luggage and mobility assistance is available at the boarding point?
