5 Days Kerala Tour from Kochi – Munnar, Thekkady & Alleppey Houseboat

Table of Contents

A 5 day Kerala itinerary offers a varied introduction to the state, with several substantial road journeys between the hills and coast. This route begins and ends in Kochi, with two nights among Munnar’s tea hills, a night near Periyar and one night aboard an Alleppey houseboat.

Route and highlights

  • Kochi airport → Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey → Kochi airport
  • Tea gardens, mountain viewpoints and a possible waterfall stop
  • Periyar Lake or a guided nature activity, subject to availability
  • One night on a private houseboat with meals arranged on board

Day 1: Kochi to Munnar

Meet your driver at Kochi airport or railway station and set off for Munnar. The road climbs gradually through rubber plantations and spice-growing country. Stop at Cheeyappara or Valara waterfall when water flow and road conditions make it worthwhile. Arrive at your hotel, check in and enjoy a quiet evening in the hills. Overnight in Munnar.

Tea-covered hills are the first big change of scenery after Kochi.

Day 2: Explore Munnar

Give the hill station a full day. Visit tea gardens and the Tea Museum when open, then continue to Photo Point, Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point. If you prefer a shorter sightseeing circuit, spend the extra time on a gentle walk or at a viewpoint. The weather can turn cool or rainy quickly, so carry a light layer. Overnight in Munnar.

Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady

Travel south through the Western Ghats to Thekkady, gateway to Periyar. A spice plantation visit reveals pepper, cardamom and other crops up close. Depending on the day’s schedule, choose a Periyar Lake boat ride or a guided nature walk. Wildlife is unpredictable, but the forest is rewarding in its own right. A Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance can be arranged in the evening. Overnight in Thekkady.

Day 4: Thekkady to Alleppey houseboat

Leave early after breakfast and allow approximately 4–5 hours or longer with stops to reach Alappuzha (Alleppey). Confirm the boarding time with the houseboat operator before departure. Board a private houseboat, enjoy lunch and watch the canals, paddy fields and village banks drift past. The boat moors for the night, when dinner is served on board. Ask about the boat’s recent photographs, meal choices and air-conditioning hours before confirming. Overnight on the houseboat.

Day 5: Alleppey to Kochi

After breakfast, disembark and drive back to Kochi for your flight or onward hotel. If your departure is late, a short Fort Kochi visit may fit, depending on traffic and check-in time.

Hotels and houseboat choices

Choose comfortable 3-star hotels, upgraded 4-star hotels or luxury 5-star properties to suit your budget. This route has two nights in Munnar, one in Thekkady and one on a private houseboat. The houseboat is selected separately by cabin quality, facilities, meal plan and air-conditioning hours; hotel star categories should not be treated as a houseboat classification. Your written quote will name every proposed property and specify what is included.

Optional activities and practical timing

The Tea Museum and spice plantation are popular additions. Eravikulam National Park may replace part of the Munnar scenic circuit when open and tickets are available; trying to fit every attraction into one day can be tiring. In Thekkady, choose a plantation visit and cultural show, with Periyar boating added only if tickets and arrival time allow. On the final day, allow roughly 2–3 hours or more for the return drive to Kochi, plus the airline’s check-in allowance. Fort Kochi sightseeing requires additional time and is best reserved for a late departure.

Best time, festivals and extensions

October to March is a popular sightseeing period. Monsoon trips offer lush scenery, but rain can change outdoor plans. Onam, Christmas and New Year bring seasonal celebrations and increased demand. For more time in Kochi or a slower pace, extend the trip by one or two nights; Kumarakom, Varkala and Kovalam can also be added to a longer itinerary.

A few booking notes

October to February is popular for comfortable sightseeing; the monsoon brings lush scenery and more rain. Boat trips and forest programmes depend on tickets, weather and local operating rules. This itinerary can be tailored with different hotel standards or an extra night in Kochi.
