Kerala houseboat on palm lined backwaters, 7 day itinerary

7 Day Kerala Itinerary: Munnar, Thekkady, Kumarakom and Alleppey Houseboat

Table of Contents

Seven Days Through the Heart of Kerala

A Kerala holiday should not feel like a race between hotels. The best journeys here are the ones where the landscape changes slowly around you. Kochi's historic streets give way to waterfalls and plantations. Munnar brings cool mountain air and endless green tea gardens. Thekkady takes you into the forests around Periyar. Kumarakom slows the journey beside the backwaters before Alleppey gives you a final night aboard a traditional houseboat. This 7 day Kerala itinerary is designed for first time visitors who want to see Kerala without spending every day inside a car.

Day 1: Kochi to Munnar

Meet your private driver at Kochi Airport, railway station or hotel and begin the journey into Kerala's Western Ghats. Do not treat today's drive simply as a transfer. As the road climbs towards Munnar, coconut palms gradually give way to rubber, pepper, cardamom and tea country. Stop at Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls when conditions are suitable, then continue through plantation country towards Munnar.

Suggested timing: 08:00 to 10:00 AM departure depending on arrival; afternoon waterfall and scenic stops; late afternoon arrival; evening at leisure.

Overnight: Munnar

Hotels in Munnar

Luxury hotel ideas: Fragrant Nature Munnar, Chandys Windy Woods, The Panoramic Getaway

Additional hotel ideas: Tea County Munnar, Amber Dale, Mountain Club Resort

Comfort and value ideas: Eastend Munnar, Las Palmas Munnar, or comparable plantation/town hotels.

Hotel classification and availability should be reconfirmed for actual travel dates.

Day 2: Tea Gardens and the Best of Munnar

Start after breakfast with Munnar's rolling tea plantations. Continue towards Mattupetty Dam and the surrounding plantation landscape. A tea factory experience is worthwhile because guests can understand how freshly picked leaves become finished tea. Continue towards Echo Point and Kundala Lake, allowing time for photographs rather than rushing between stops. Travelers interested in history can also visit the Tea Museum. Optional: Active travelers can start early for a Kolukkumalai sunrise jeep experience. The final arrangements and current jeep charges should be reconfirmed locally before booking.

Overnight: Munnar

Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady

After breakfast, drive towards Thekkady through cardamom and spice growing country. After check in, visit a spice plantation with a local guide and learn how pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and other spices grow. Evening choices: Kathakali performance, Kalaripayattu martial arts show, local market walk, Ayurvedic massage, or a quiet evening at the resort.

Overnight: Thekkady

Hotels in Thekkady

Luxury hotel ideas: Spice Village CGH Earth, Elephant Court, Niraamaya Retreats Cardamom Club

Additional hotel ideas: Cardamom County, Greenwoods Resort, Poetree Sarovar Portico Comfort and value ideas: Abad Green Forest, Jungle Park Resorts or comparable properties.

Day 4: Thekkady and Periyar

Thekkady deserves more than a quick boat ride. Active travelers can consider bamboo rafting, which combines forest walking with time on the water. A Periyar boat safari is a less physically demanding alternative. Guests interested in birds and plants may prefer a guided nature walk, while border hiking is better suited to active travelers wanting a longer trekking experience. Suggested combination: Morning Periyar nature experience; afternoon spice plantation or leisure; evening Kathakali or Kalaripayattu. Important: Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed and current activity timings and prices should be verified at booking.

Overnight: Thekkady

Day 5: Thekkady to Kumarakom

Leave the hills after breakfast and travel towards Kerala's backwaters. Check into your resort and deliberately leave part of the afternoon free. Optional experiences include kayaking through smaller canals, cycling through villages, bird watching, a shikara cruise, Ayurvedic treatment or a village walk. Kumarakom adds something that a direct Thekkady to Alleppey transfer cannot: time to actually stay beside the backwaters.

Overnight: Kumarakom

Hotels in Kumarakom

Luxury: Kumarakom Lake Resort, Taj Kumarakom Resort & Spa, Coconut Lagoon CGH Earth

Additional hotel ideas: Lakesong Kumarakom, Backwater Ripples, Abad Whispering Palms Comfort and value ideas: Royal Riviera, Manor Backwater Resort and similar locally rated properties.

Day 6: Kumarakom to Alleppey Houseboat

After a relaxed breakfast, travel towards Alleppey and board a private houseboat around midday. The cruise itself is the experience. Watch village life unfold beside the waterways as the boat passes coconut palms, homes, churches, temples and paddy fields. Typical schedule: 12:00 to 1:00 PM boarding; Kerala style lunch; afternoon backwater cruise; late afternoon tea and snacks; evening anchoring according to local rules; dinner freshly prepared onboard.

Overnight: Private houseboat.

Day 7: Alleppey to Kochi

Wake beside the backwaters and enjoy breakfast onboard. After checkout, drive towards Kochi. If the flight is later in the evening, use the remaining time for Fort Kochi, Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, Mattancherry, the Jewish Quarter or spice market before airport or hotel transfer.

5 Days or 7 Days in Kerala?

Five days can cover Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey for travelers with limited time. Seven days is considerably more relaxed because it gives Munnar two nights, allows proper time for Thekkady activities and introduces Kumarakom rather than using the backwaters only as an overnight stop.

When to Visit Kerala

October through March is popular for comfortable sightseeing. Monsoon months create spectacular green landscapes but can affect outdoor plans. Munnar and Thekkady are cooler than the coastal areas, particularly in the evenings.
